The Night We Opened For A Video
In 1982, I was running sound for a punk rock band called The Libido Boys when we landed one of the strangest gigs I can remember from those days.
We opened for a video.
Yes, you read that correctly. A video.
To be more precise, we opened for a musician who had composed and performed all the music himself to accompany a series of videos. It might not sound particularly unusual today, but remember, this was 1982. MTV had premiered less than a year earlier, and the idea of watching music videos as entertainment was still relatively new.
The gig was at Finks, a popular bar in Normal, Illinois, near Illinois State University. What I remember most about the place was its unusual performance space. The band played upstairs in a room that looked as though it might once have been an enclosed porch. There were windows everywhere, which made for an interesting setting for a rock show.
I also remember a thunderstorm moving into the area during one of our appearances there. Whether it was that particular night or another time we played Finks, I can't say for certain. But I still have an image in my mind of lightning flashing through those windows while the band played. It was quite a light show, courtesy of Mother Nature.
As for the musician we opened for that night, I wish I could remember his name. I can't recall much about the videos themselves, either, except that the music reminded me of Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, and Ultravox. It was electronic, atmospheric, and quite different from what we were playing.
And what were we playing?
The Libido Boys specialized in punk rock covers, including songs by the Ramones, Buzzcocks, The Undertones, Stiv Bators, and the Sex Pistols. It was loud, fast, and energetic, the kind of music that defined a particular moment in our lives and in the local music scene.
The band had a relatively short run, from 1981 to 1982, performing around the Illinois Valley, roughly 90 miles southwest of Chicago. Those were heady days for live music in the area. Bars and clubs provided opportunities for local bands to play, and there was a real sense of excitement about being part of the scene. We weren't thinking about musical legacies or preserving memories for posterity. We were simply enjoying ourselves, playing music, and looking forward to the next gig.
Recently, one of the band's original members, Greg "Goose" Leszczynski, passed away. Hearing about his death brought back a flood of memories of The Libido Boys and those brief but memorable years. And for reasons I can't quite explain, one of the first things I remembered was that strange night at Finks when we opened for a video.
It's funny how memory works. After more than four decades, I can't remember the name of the musician, the songs we played that night, or even whether the thunderstorm happened during that particular performance. But I can still picture that upstairs room with all its windows, the electronic music coming from the videos, and the unlikely pairing of a punk rock band with something that seemed to belong to the future.Back then, we had no idea how much music, technology, and the world around us would change. We were just a bunch of guys enjoying the music and making the most of our time together.
And now, more than forty years later, with the passing of Goose, those memories seem a little more precious.
The Libido Boys may have been a short-lived band, but for a brief moment in the early 1980s, we were part of a vibrant local music scene, making plenty of noise and having a great time doing it.
Including that one unforgettable night when we opened for a video.
