Between The City And The Mountains: My Morning Walk In Daejeon
This morning, as I walked along the river in Daejeon, the sun was beginning to break through the clouds.
The air was cool, but not uncomfortably so, although the forecast calls for colder weather later this week.
It was one of those beautiful autumn mornings when the world seems to be waking up slowly, and I was reminded once again why I enjoy getting up early and taking this walk.
One of the things I've always liked about living in Daejeon is that, despite being a large city, it doesn't always feel like one.
From where I was standing beside the river, I could see towering apartment buildings rising above the surrounding neighborhoods. Yet beyond those buildings, mountains stretched across the horizon, their outlines becoming clearer as the morning sunlight filtered through the clouds. It was an interesting contrast, a reminder that even in a modern Korean city, you're never very far from nature.
In some ways, living in Daejeon gives me the best of both worlds. I have all the conveniences of city life, yet there are mornings when I feel as though I'm walking somewhere in the countryside. And if I want to experience the excitement and bustle of Seoul, I'm only about an hour away by high-speed train.
That's another thing I've come to appreciate during my many years in Asia: traveling by train. South Korea, like Japan and much of Europe, has developed an excellent railway system, something I wish the United States would take more seriously. I realize Americans love their automobiles and the freedom of the open road, but there's something wonderful about boarding a train, settling into a comfortable seat, and watching the countryside pass by. After all these years in Korea, I can't imagine life without the convenience of train travel.
But this morning, I wasn't thinking about going anywhere beyond the river. I was simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings and the familiar faces I've come to recognize during my daily walks.
Almost every morning, I encounter the same group of runners along the river. For a while, we simply passed one another without saying anything. Then one morning, I decided to greet them with a friendly annyeonghaseyo. The following morning, I greeted them again. Before long, something rather nice happened. They began greeting me first. Now, when we see one another approaching, someone invariably calls out annyeonghaseyo before I even have a chance to say it myself. We don't know one another's names. We don't stop to talk. We probably know nothing about each other's lives. Yet for those few seconds every morning, there's a genuine sense of familiarity and connection. I've often thought about how much these little encounters mean to me.
During my years in America, I don't recall experiencing quite the same feeling of belonging through such simple daily rituals. Perhaps it has something to do with the neighborhoods where I've lived in Korea, or perhaps it's simply the familiarity that develops when people share the same paths and routines. Whatever the reason, these small exchanges have become another part of what makes this country feel like home. And after more than three decades in Korea, home is exactly what it has become.
My morning walks also give me something that can be difficult to find during the rest of the day: time to think. As I walk, I find myself considering all sorts of things. Sometimes I think about the classes I'll be teaching later in the day, the students I'll be seeing, or the lessons I need to prepare. Other times, my thoughts turn to writing, to an essay I've been working on, a story I want to tell, or some long-forgotten experience that suddenly comes back to me.
In fact, I'd have to say that some of my best thinking takes place during these walks. There's something about being outdoors, moving at a comfortable pace, and taking in the world around me that seems to clear my mind. Ideas come more easily. Memories surface unexpectedly. Sometimes a simple observation becomes the beginning of an essay. I might leave my apartment thinking about the day's responsibilities and return with an idea for something entirely different. That's one of the pleasures of walking. You never quite know where your thoughts will take you.
But occasionally, my thoughts wander beyond the ordinary concerns of daily life. This morning, as I watched the sunlight breaking through the clouds, I stopped for a moment and looked up at the sky. There was something almost overwhelming about the beauty of it all: the clouds drifting overhead, the mountains in the distance, the changing light, and the quiet river flowing beside me. And I found myself thinking about something much larger than my morning walk.
How many people before me have stood somewhere on this earth, gazed at the morning sky, and experienced that same feeling of wonder? How many have thought about the passing of time, the mystery of existence, or simply how fortunate they were to witness another sunrise?
Of course, we live in a troubled world. There are wars, political divisions, personal hardships, illnesses, and countless uncertainties beyond our control. We have responsibilities to meet and problems to solve. Some days, the weight of those concerns can make it difficult to appreciate anything else. It's easy to become so preoccupied with what we have to do, where we have to be, and what might happen tomorrow that we overlook the remarkable world we're living in today.
But mornings like this remind me that beauty doesn't disappear simply because the world is troubled. It's still there in the sunlight breaking through the clouds, the mountains beyond the apartment buildings, the changing colors of autumn, and the friendly greeting of a stranger along the river.
These are ordinary things, moments that might pass unnoticed if we're too busy thinking about something else. Yet sometimes they're precisely what we need to remind ourselves how much there is to appreciate about being alive.
Perhaps that's what I enjoy most about my early morning walks. For an hour or so, before the demands of the day take over, I have an opportunity to step back from everything and simply observe the world. I can think about the day ahead, reflect on the life I've lived, and occasionally allow myself to wonder about the extraordinary circumstances that have brought all of us to this particular moment in time.
This morning, as I continued along the river, the clouds slowly began to part, and the sunlight spread across the mountains and the apartment buildings in the distance. Before long, I'd be back home, preparing for another day of teaching, writing, and attending to the ordinary responsibilities of life.
But for those few moments beside the river, none of that seemed particularly urgent. I was content simply to stand there, looking at the morning sky and appreciating the fact that I was here to see it.
Another morning. Another sunrise. Another day of life on this extraordinary planet.
And another reason to be grateful.
