Clouds Over the Yudeungcheon

There are mornings when the sky seems to demand your attention.

As I walked along the Yudeungcheon in Daejeon, I found myself looking up at a magnificent display of clouds stretching across the blue sky. Some were brilliantly white, illuminated by the morning sunlight, while others carried darker shades of gray.

Below them, the river reflected the entire scene, creating an almost perfect mirror of the heavens above. For a moment, it seemed as though the sky stretched endlessly in both directions.

I stopped to take a photograph, although I wasn't sure any photograph could quite capture what I was seeing.

I have to admit that I've never taken the time to learn the different types of clouds. I couldn't tell you the difference between a stratocumulus and an altocumulus without looking them up. I've always been content simply to admire them, watching their shapes change as they drift across the sky. And on this particular morning, they were especially beautiful.

As I've grown older, I've found myself marveling at nature in ways I seldom did when I was younger. Perhaps age has a way of opening our eyes to things we once overlooked. Or perhaps, after so many years of rushing from one place to another, I've finally learned the pleasure of slowing down.

When I was younger, life always seemed to be about getting somewhere. There were dreams to pursue, places to explore, responsibilities to fulfill, and an endless succession of tomorrows waiting just beyond the horizon. I was so often looking toward what lay ahead that I sometimes forgot to appreciate what was right in front of me.

I wonder now how many beautiful mornings slipped past unnoticed. How many magnificent skies did I fail to admire? How many autumn afternoons did I hurry through without noticing the colors of the leaves or the gentle movement of the trees in the breeze?

It's not that I didn't appreciate nature. Some of my fondest memories of Korea involve hiking in the mountains, exploring national parks, and visiting places renowned for their natural beauty. But back then, I often associated beauty with destinations, with somewhere special I had to travel to experience something extraordinary.

What I overlooked was the beauty of the ordinary world around me.

These days, a sunrise over the river, the first hints of autumn in the trees, a flower glistening with morning dew, or a sky filled with clouds can hold my attention in ways I might never have imagined years ago. I have walked the same paths countless times, yet I continue to discover something new.

Perhaps this is one of the unexpected gifts of growing older.

We often speak of aging in terms of what time takes away from us. We remember our younger selves, the energy we once possessed, and the years that seem to have disappeared far too quickly. Yet growing older can also bring a deeper appreciation of life and a greater awareness of its fleeting beauty.

After more than three decades in Korea, I still find myself astonished by the beauty of this country. What surprises me most is that I no longer have to seek it out in distant mountains or unfamiliar places. I can find it along a river I've walked beside countless times, in a neighborhood I know by heart, or in the changing colors of a sky I've looked up at for years.

Perhaps the scenery hasn't changed nearly as much as I have.

On this particular morning, I stood quietly beside the river, watching the clouds and their reflections in the water. Across the river, apartment buildings rose above the trees, and bridges stretched across the familiar landscape. Somewhere beyond my view, the city was beginning another busy day. Yet here, for a few precious minutes, there was nothing I needed to do and nowhere I needed to be.

I could simply stand there and marvel at the beauty before me.

Eventually, I continued my walk, glancing back occasionally as the clouds slowly changed their shapes and their reflections shifted across the river. Before long, the scene would be different. The light would change, the clouds would move on, and this particular moment would become another memory.

Later, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to learn a little more about the clouds that had so captivated me. From what I could determine, they were most likely stratocumulus clouds, those broad, rounded formations of white and gray that spread across the sky in patches. Some of the smaller formations may have been altocumulus, which form at higher altitudes.

So now I've learned something new. Whether I'll remember those names the next time I look up at the sky is another matter.

But in the end, does it really make any difference what kind of clouds they were?

I don't think so.

Knowing their names might satisfy my curiosity, but it cannot explain the feeling of standing beside that river, watching the sky reflected in the water, and experiencing that wonderful sense of amazement at something so ordinary and yet so extraordinary.

As I grow older, I hope I never lose that sense of wonder. There is still so much beauty waiting to be discovered, even in the most familiar places.

And no matter how many seasons come and go, I want to keep looking up at the sky and finding something that takes my breath away.
