No Swimming In The Sunflowers

During my morning walk along the river, I came across something that made me smile.

A large sign standing in the middle of a beautiful field of sunflowers warned visitors that swimming was strictly prohibited.

Now, I've seen plenty of warning signs during my years in Korea, but this one struck me as particularly amusing. Surrounded by hundreds of bright yellow sunflowers, it seemed to be warning people against taking a refreshing dip in a sea of flowers.

Of course, the sign was intended for the nearby river, where the water is apparently deep enough to pose a danger. But standing there among all those sunflowers, it looked wonderfully out of place.

I couldn't resist taking a few photographs.

As I continued my walk, I found myself thinking about how often it's the unexpected little things that brighten our days. We tend to associate happiness with important occasions, special achievements, or moments we've been looking forward to. Yet sometimes all it takes is a curious sight along a familiar path to make us stop and smile.

I've walked past these sunflowers countless times this autumn, watching them grow, bloom, and gradually change with the season. Every morning, they offer something different. Some stand tall and proud, while others have begun to droop, their bright yellow petals showing the effects of passing time. Before long, they'll disappear, and this stretch of the riverbank will look very different.

Perhaps that's another reason I've come to appreciate these morning walks so much. They remind me that there's beauty and happiness to be found in the most ordinary places, provided we're willing to notice them.

We don't always need to travel somewhere new or experience something extraordinary to find a little joy. Sometimes it's waiting along a familiar path, in the changing colors of autumn, in a field of sunflowers, or even in a warning sign that seems to have found itself in the wrong place.

And perhaps that's a good reminder for all of us. Life is serious enough without taking every little thing seriously. There's always room for a little laughter, a little wonder, and the simple pleasure of being alive on another beautiful morning.

As for the sign, I was happy to follow its instructions.

I had no intention of going swimming.

But I certainly didn't mind getting lost in a sea of sunflowers.
