The Ash Tree Gets Its Due

Ash trees don’t always get much attention.

Through spring and summer, they can disappear into the green around them—quiet, familiar, easy to pass without a second glance.

Unlike the fiery splendor of the maple or the brilliant gold of the ginkgo, the ash does not always command attention in autumn. Its beauty is quieter—copper, rust, orange, and muted red—and perhaps that is why it is so easy to overlook.

But this morning, while many of the trees around it were still holding on to summer green, this ash had already begun to change.

It seemed to have heard autumn approaching before the others.

Ash trees are often among the first to respond to autumn’s shorter days and cooler nights. For a little while, the tree that blended into the background suddenly becomes the one that catches your eye.

I’ve been noticing things like this more often on my early morning walks.

The faint light before sunrise. Clouds slowly catching fire at their edges. The cool air moving along the river. The sound of birds before the city is fully awake. And now, the first leaves quietly surrendering their green.

A few months ago, I might have walked past this tree without really seeing it.

This morning, I stopped.

There it was against the October sky, already dressed for autumn while the trees around it were still green.

I think there is something beautiful in that.

Nature never seems to hurry, and yet it is always changing. A leaf turns. The light shifts. The air cools. One season begins to loosen its hold and another quietly takes its place.

The more I walk in these early hours, the more I find myself paying attention—not only to the large and dramatic things, but to the small changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Sometimes beauty does not arrive all at once.

Sometimes it begins quietly, with a single tree changing before the others.

This morning, I noticed.

And today, the ash gets its due.
