The Flowers Are Calling My Name

I've reached the point in my morning walks where I think the flowers have started talking to me.

"Hey, you! Over here! Take my picture!"

And just when I think I've taken enough photographs for one morning, another flower seems to whisper, "Wait a minute! What about me?"

For the past week, I've become somewhat obsessed with the zinnias blooming along my morning walking route beside the Yudeungcheon in Daejeon. Their brilliant shades of orange, pink, purple, red, and yellow are impossible to ignore. Every morning, I find myself stopping to take more photographs, sometimes returning to the very same flowers I photographed the day before.

This morning, a particularly colorful gathering caught my attention. Tiny droplets of water still clung to their petals, and one large orange zinnia in the foreground seemed especially eager to have its picture taken. The others appeared to be waiting patiently for their turn.

Naturally, I couldn't disappoint them.

And I'm certainly not the only one answering the flowers' invitations. Along the river, I often see other people stopping to photograph the blossoms or simply admire their beauty. Sometimes several of us are doing the same thing, phones in hand, searching for just the right angle. Apparently, the flowers have quite a following.

Until recently, however, I knew very little about zinnias beyond their beautiful colors.

Did you know that zinnias have traditionally been associated with affection, remembrance, and thoughts of absent friends? In the Victorian language of flowers, they were connected with remembering those who were far away. Their ability to continue blooming well into autumn also makes them a fitting symbol of endurance and perseverance.

Learning about their symbolism has given me another reason to appreciate these beautiful flowers. What I once admired simply for their brilliant colors now carries a little more meaning.

It's funny how much my morning walks have changed since I started them a few months ago. What began as a way to get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air has turned into something I never expected. Somewhere along the Yudeungcheon, nature began capturing my attention in ways it never had before.

At first, I was content to follow the path along the river, watch the sunrise, and get in a few kilometers before breakfast. But gradually, other things began catching my eye. A magnificent cloud formation would make me stop and look up. The morning sunlight reflecting off the river would send me reaching for my phone. Then came the flowers, and before long, I was stopping to photograph practically every colorful blossom along the path.

And now that autumn is well underway, there's even more competing for my attention. The mornings have become pleasantly cool, the leaves are turning beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow, and the zinnias are still putting on a magnificent display.

What surprises me most is that much of this beauty was here long before I began paying attention to it.

For years, I walked past flowers, trees, and rivers without giving them much thought. I was usually too preoccupied with work, schedules, and the responsibilities of everyday life to stop and admire them. A flower was simply a flower, and a sunrise was something that happened while I was preparing for another busy day.

I suppose I was looking at the world without always taking the time to see it.

These days, I look forward to my morning walks as much for the little surprises waiting along the way as for the exercise itself. There's a wonderful feeling of anticipation when I leave home, wondering what might catch my attention that morning. Even familiar places seem different when the light changes or the seasons give them a new appearance.

Perhaps that's what I appreciate most about these mornings. After all these years, I'm still discovering new things about the world around me, even something as simple as the meaning behind a flower. And I've come to realize that some of the happiest moments of the day can be the ones we never planned.

As autumn continues to transform the landscape, I know the zinnias won't be around much longer. Soon the colder weather will arrive, and these colorful blossoms will disappear until another growing season. In the meantime, I intend to enjoy them while they're still here, along with all the other beautiful sights that autumn has to offer.

Of course, I could be mistaken about the flowers whispering to me. Maybe they're not asking me to take their photographs at all.

Maybe they're just wondering why this fellow with the camera keeps coming back every morning!

On the other hand, if the flowers really are calling my name and asking me to take their pictures, I'm going to oblige them.

After all, who am I to turn down such lovely subjects?
