The Roads We Take

This morning, during my walk along the Yudeungcheon in Daejeon, I stopped to photograph a signpost.

Two arrows pointing in opposite directions. Mannyeon-dong, three kilometers to the left. Yongmun-dong, three kilometers to the right.

Above them, the morning sun was struggling to break through a thick blanket of clouds. The trees were beginning to show their autumn colors, and the familiar walking and cycling path stretched away into the distance.

I've passed this signpost countless times without giving it much thought. But this morning, something about it caught my attention.

Perhaps it was the way the arrows pointed in opposite directions, each promising a destination three kilometers away. Or perhaps it was the changing season, which always seems to encourage a little reflection.

Whatever the reason, I found myself thinking about the roads we take in life, and especially those we never imagined ourselves traveling.

When we're young, we tend to think of life as a journey with a fairly predictable destination. We make plans, set goals, and imagine how things will unfold. We believe that if we work hard enough and make the right decisions, everything will eventually fall into place.

But life rarely follows the route we originally planned.

Some roads lead to wonderful opportunities. Others bring disappointment, heartbreak, or challenges that test us in ways we never thought possible. Sometimes we find ourselves standing at a crossroads, uncertain which direction to take. And sometimes circumstances make the decision for us.

Looking back over my own life, I realize how many seemingly ordinary decisions changed its course. A choice made decades ago, an unexpected opportunity, a chance meeting, or a moment when I decided to take a risk rather than remain where I was.

At the time, I couldn't possibly have known where those decisions would lead.

I suppose that's true for all of us.

We can look back and recognize the significance of certain moments, but when we're living through them, we rarely understand just how important they might become.

And perhaps that's one of life's most remarkable mysteries. We never really know which ordinary day might change everything.

These days, I've become increasingly aware of another truth.

We spend so much time thinking about where we're going that we sometimes forget to appreciate where we are.

We postpone happiness until we reach some imagined destination. When we have more money. When life becomes less complicated. When our problems are finally behind us. When everything is just the way we want it to be.

But what if that perfect moment never arrives?

What if the happiness we've been waiting for has been quietly accompanying us all along, hidden in the ordinary moments we so often overlook?

A beautiful sunrise. A conversation with someone we love. A kind word from a stranger. The changing colors of autumn. The simple pleasure of walking beside a river on a cool October morning.

None of these moments announces itself as extraordinary. Yet, looking back, they may become some of the memories we treasure most.

I've also come to understand that moving forward doesn't always mean making great progress or accomplishing something remarkable. Sometimes it simply means getting up in the morning, finding the courage to face another day, and refusing to let yesterday's disappointments diminish today's possibilities.

There is strength in that. And there is hope.

As I stood beneath that signpost this morning, I realized that neither arrow could tell me anything about what I might encounter along the way. They could tell me the distance, but not what the journey would hold.

And life is much the same.

We can measure distances, count the years, and mark important dates on a calendar. But we cannot measure the happiness waiting around the next corner, predict the people who will enter our lives, or know which unexpected experience might give our days a deeper meaning.

That's why I no longer believe that every road must lead somewhere extraordinary to be worth traveling.

Sometimes the greatest gift of a journey is discovering that the life we're living, with all its imperfections and uncertainties, is already filled with things worth celebrating.

The sun eventually finds its way through the clouds. The seasons change. New opportunities appear. People enter our lives and change them in beautiful ways. And even after our most difficult days, another morning arrives.

There are still roads ahead of me that I haven't traveled, experiences I haven't enjoyed, and memories I haven't made.

I don't know where all those roads will lead.

But I do know something I might not have appreciated as much when I was younger.

The most important thing isn't how far we travel or how quickly we reach our destination. It's whether we remain open to the beauty, love, and possibilities that life offers us along the way.

This morning, I took a photograph of a signpost.

Then I continued my walk, grateful for the morning, grateful for the journey that brought me here, and grateful that there is still so much of life ahead to discover.

After all, every new day is another opportunity to find something beautiful along the road.
