This Morning, I Stopped to Photograph a Flower

It was a beautiful golden-orange zinnia with a deep red center and tiny drops of water resting on its petals. Something about its brilliant colors caught my attention. I moved closer, took a few photographs, and spent a little longer admiring it before continuing my walk.

There was a time when I might have walked right past it without giving it a second thought.

Lately, though, I've found myself paying closer attention to the world around me. Perhaps it's because I'm getting older. Perhaps it's because of everything I've experienced this year. Whatever the reason, I've come to appreciate these small moments in ways I never did before.

When I started my early morning walks this summer, my intentions were simple. I wanted to get some exercise, regain my strength after surgery, and establish a healthy routine. I certainly never imagined that those walks would become one of the most rewarding parts of my day.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

I began noticing things I had overlooked before. The first rays of sunlight appearing over the horizon. The changing colors of the trees along the river. The quiet beauty of a morning before the city has fully awakened. And sometimes, something as simple as a flower covered with droplets of water.

These are ordinary things, of course. They have always been there. The difference is that I'm finally taking the time to appreciate them.

The past few months have given me plenty of reasons to reflect on my life. I've thought about the years behind me, the experiences that have shaped me, and the things I still want to do. I've also come to understand just how easily we can take our health, our happiness, and even an ordinary morning for granted.

I don't spend every morning thinking about these things. Most of the time, I'm simply enjoying my walk, taking photographs, or wondering what the day ahead might bring. But I've discovered that happiness doesn't always come from doing something extraordinary. Sometimes it comes from noticing something beautiful that happens to be right in front of us.

And perhaps that's what I appreciate most about these mornings. They remind me that despite life's uncertainties and challenges, there is still so much to enjoy, so much to discover, and so much to look forward to.

As I continued my walk, I found myself smiling. It was such a small thing, stopping to admire a flower, but it had made my morning a little brighter.

And tomorrow, when I head out for another walk, I know there will be something else waiting to catch my attention.

I look forward to finding it.
