Learning to See the Extraordinary in the Ordinary
I don't mean simply admiring its beauty for a moment, taking a photograph, and continuing on your way. I mean actually stopping, looking closely, and thinking about what you're seeing.
How did this flower become such a brilliant shade of pink, red, orange, or yellow? How did its petals develop into such an intricate arrangement? Why are some flowers large and full, while others have only a few delicate petals? And how can flowers growing just inches apart from one another be so wonderfully different?
As I stood admiring this beautiful field of zinnias, I found myself thinking about questions like these.
And then my thoughts wandered back to my college days and my biology professor, Mike Toliver.
I couldn't help smiling. I think he would appreciate where I'm going with all these questions about nature.
I still remember doing something with beans in his biology class. I believe it had something to do with genetics, DNA, or mutations, although I confess that the details have become rather fuzzy over the years. Perhaps that explains why I ended up with a B in his course!
But I remember Professor Toliver fondly, and I like to think he would be pleased to know that, all these years later, one of his former students is still curious about the natural world and still asking questions about the remarkable mysteries of life.
Of course, there are scientific explanations for the extraordinary variety of colors, shapes, and patterns we see in flowers. Genetics, pigments, heredity, and environmental conditions all play important roles. But knowing that science can explain these things doesn't make them any less remarkable to me.
If anything, it makes them even more fascinating.
But these days, when I stop to admire a flower, I find myself thinking about much more than its biology.
I think about life itself.
Over the past several months, something has changed in the way I look at the world around me. Things I might once have passed without giving them much thought now seem to hold a special significance.
A flower blooming beside a sidewalk. Sunlight filtering through the branches of a tree. Clouds drifting slowly across the morning sky. The changing colors of autumn leaves. Even the familiar rhythm of the seasons seems to carry a deeper meaning.
These are things I have seen thousands of times throughout my life. Yet somehow, I am beginning to see them differently.
Perhaps it has something to do with everything I have experienced this year. When life reminds you of its uncertainty, you begin to understand just how precious an ordinary day can be.
You become more aware of the things you might otherwise take for granted.
And you begin to realize that the world has been offering you these little moments of beauty all along. Perhaps you were simply too busy to notice them. This reminds me of one of my favorite moments from Thornton Wilder's Our Town.
Near the end of the play, Emily Webb, who has died, is given the opportunity to revisit an ordinary day from her life. What she discovers is heartbreaking. The people around her are so preoccupied with their daily routines that they scarcely notice the extraordinary gift of simply being alive.
Overwhelmed by this realization, Emily asks the Stage Manager:
"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?—every, every minute?"
What a remarkable question.
And what an important reminder.
I have thought about that scene many times over the years, but I believe I understand its meaning more deeply today than I ever did before.
And with it, countless little wonders we may never notice again.
Perhaps that is why I have become so fascinated with flowers, trees, clouds, and the changing seasons. They remind me to slow down, to look more carefully, and to appreciate the extraordinary beauty that exists in what we often consider ordinary.
When I look at these zinnias, I see more than a magnificent collection of colorful flowers.
I see the remarkable complexity of nature. I see the passage of time, the changing seasons, and the delicate cycle of life. I see beauty that exists whether anyone stops to appreciate it or not.
And perhaps most importantly, I am reminded that I am fortunate enough to be standing here, at this very moment, enjoying it.
I don't pretend to have discovered some great secret about life. I still have days when I become distracted by worries and responsibilities, when I hurry along without paying much attention to the world around me.
But I am learning.
Learning to pause a little longer.
Learning to appreciate the smallest things.
Learning to recognize that what once seemed insignificant may actually be filled with meaning.
And learning that sometimes the most profound moments in life are not the extraordinary events we spend years anticipating, but the quiet, seemingly unimportant moments we experience every day.
Like standing in front of a field of colorful zinnias on an autumn day and wondering how something so simple could be so beautiful.
Perhaps the greatest change in my life is not that the world has suddenly become more beautiful.
It is that I am finally learning to see how beautiful it has always been.
